Preparing The Home For The Hurricane Season

Below are a few ideas that could help minimize damages and conserve your efforts:

First and foremost, check your insurance policies to see if you have flood insurance as flood damage is not usually covered by homeowners insurance. If you would like to see if you qualify for the National Flood Insurance Program, call 1888-CALL-FLOOD ext. 445.

Second, secure your home by making sure that you have impact resistant garage doors and windows or even hurricane shutters. If you have none of the above, contact a contractor to help in reinforcing the doors and windows.

Third, make sure to hurricane-proof your surroundings. Have a good look at the trees around your home. Do the trunks or major limbs look damaged or diseased? Are your trees leaning in a certain direction? Keep a close eye on this, as trees can often cause considerable damage to homes and cars. Make sure to also secure your outdoor belongings such as: trash bins, grills, toys, potted plants and yes, even garden gnomes.

Fourth, put together an emergency plan, not only for your family but also for your pets. Know where your important papers and prescription medications are located. Have the latter in waterproof containers or a watertight bag. Animals should have their leashes, carriers and papers readily available, as well.

It is also imperative to have a disaster supply kit on hand. Stock up on plenty of water; it has been recommended to stock at least 1 gallon of water, per person, per day, for the duration of 3-7 days. If possible, also arrange to have 3-7 days worth of food (for animals and people) available, such as non-perishable packaged or canned food and juices.

Last, but not least, remember to also pack your day to day essentials. Grab a can opener, cooking tools, paper plates, plastic utensils, blankets, pillows, seasonal clothing, a first aid kit, toiletries and hygiene items; as well as, flashlights with extra batteries, a back up cell phone charger/battery, cash, pet care items, a tool kit and a vehicle with a full tank of gas, just in case you need to evacuate at a minutes notice.

A truly special visionary and one of the most impactful leaders in South Florida sports history; Boca Raton's Howard Schnellenberger, Head Coach of the FAU's football team, will be the June 1st guest speaker for the Boca Raton Executive Club. He has constructed championship programs in South Florida, and now he is proudly watching the construction of a quickly rising stadium in Boca Raton - the new on-campus home of the Owls!

Coach Schnellenberger's hometown is Louisville, Kentucky where he learned football tactics as a player for "Bear" Bryant & Blanton Collier at the University of Kentucky. He served as an assistant to Collier at Kentucky & Bryant at Alabama. In the NFL, he assisted George Allen with the LA Rams and Don Shula with the Miami Dolphins. He was Head Coach of the Baltimore Coats from 1973 to 1974.

Coach Schnellenberger joined Florida Atlantic University staff May 1, 1998 to build a collegiate football team from "scratch" to establish a program and an on-campus stadium; instrumental in fund raising, and conception of football program and future stadium for FAU. He gained approval from the Board of Regents in January 1999 with the first game played on Sept. 1, 2001. FAU holds the record for the fastest start-up program to earn Division 1-A victory and youngest program to win a bowl game. By 2008 Coach Schnellenberger climbed to the ranks of Divison I-AA, joined a conference & began playing football in the country's highest classification; the Bowl Subdivision grabbing a league title & two (2) bowl championships. Known throughout Florida for his outstanding efforts in resurrecting University of Miami's football program back in the 1980's. Coach Schnellenberger has saved two programs (neither affiliated with a conference) from virtual extinction.

He is married, to Beverlee since 1959, has two sons; Stuart and Tim, also three grandchildren. His eldest Son, Stephen passed away in 2008.
